Project Name: Croton Water Tunnels (Additions)
Year in Operation: 2011
Sector: Water & Waste
Subsector: Water
Status: In Operation

Description: Three additional large bore (12') water tunnels approximately 180 feet under the Bronx, with a total length of 8,881 feet, bringing water to and from the Croton filtration plant in Van Cortlandt Park, to filter and disinfect up to 30 percent of the city's drinking water. The treated water will come from the Croton watershed east of the Hudson River. The main arteries of the Van Cortlandt Park plant were carved, drilled, and blasted out of rock deep under the City. The new tunnels connect with the "New Croton Aqueduct" -- a brick aqueduct built in the 1880's to replace the original Croton Aqueduct that supplied water to Central Park.
