Background informationProject Created: June 18, 2017

Project Name: New Tappan Zee Bridge
Year in Operation: 2019
Sector: Transportation
Subsector: Roads, Bridge
Status: Design / Construction
Type: New Facility
Description: The new Tappan Zee Bridge (also known as the New NY Bridge) is a new, twin cable-stayed bridge being built to replace the current Governor Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge over New York's Hudson River. Construction began in 2013, with partial opening expected in 2017 and full opening targeted for 2018. The new bridge is now under construction a few yards to the north of the existing bridge, and will connect to the existing highway approaches of the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) on both river banks. The new Tappan Zee Bridge will be administered by the New York State Thruway Authority. The authority is project co-sponsor, along with the state Department of Transportation. When completed, the new Tappan Zee Bridge will be one of the widest cable stay bridges on the planet, with a combined deck width across both decks of almost 56 metres (184 ft) — barely one foot (30 cm) wider than the relatively "short-span", cable-stayed Leonard Zakim Bridge in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, which is 183 feet wide. The new bridge has a design life of at least 100 years.
Delivery Method as described in the country where it's located: Design Build

TZC is working closely on the project with a team of employees from the New York State Thruway Authority and the State Department of Transportation.
