Description: The project is a joint venture between the Maine and New Hampshire Departments of Transportation, with MaineDOT serving as the lead. The two states have entered into a Three Bridge Agreement covering their jointly owned bridges spanning the Piscataqua River. This is a complete replacement of the 1940 steel lift bridge that crosses the River between Portsmouth NH and Kittery ME. The design includes the first-ever use of precast-concrete segmental towers on a lift bridge. The new bridge will carry one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction, with a set of railroad tracks down the middle. In an innovative design, the railroad tracks will be stored in a much higher rest position, providing significantly higher clearances and reducing movements of the lift structure by more than 60%. The design also includes innovative tower piers that sustain vessel impact without a large separate fender system.

From Public (Government) Sources to Producers: The project is expected to cost approximately $160 million. A September 2014 TIGER grant in the amount of $25M was awarded for the rail portion of the structure. Design by JV of FIGG I and Hardesty & Hanover. Construction by Maine based Cianbro.
