Description: Emergency replacement of the collapsed Morandi bridge over the Polcevera River in Genoa, Italy. The old bridge collapsed in the Summer of 2018, leaving key commercial and residential section of Genoa cut off from each other. The bridge is part of the A10 motorway, an important connection between Italy and southeastern France. The new bridge was designed by architect Renzo Piano - who offered both his concept and his supervision on the project for free. Piano has suggested that the bridge has a design life of 1,000 years - because of its properly protected steel design, with every piece accessible for repair, repainting, and maintenance. Construction is by a joint venture of Salini Impregilo and (shipbuilder) Fincantieri Infrastructure. The JV - Pergenova - will work with Italferr, the consulting arm of the Italian railway state company, who will handle engineering. The new bridge will have a 3,600 ft main steel deck running across 20 spans, supported by 19 concrete piers, spaced at 164-foot intervals, except for the pair on either side of the Polcevera River, which are 328 feet apart. The bridge is designed to reflect light during the day, and to use stored solar energy to light the structure at night.

From Public (Government) Sources to Producers: The official investigation of the reason for the collapse is still ongoing. Bridge operator Autostrade per I'Italia was barred from participating the demolition of the old bridge or the construction of the new bridge. There is an unresolved dispute between the bridge operator and the government as to whether the operator must finance both the demolition of the old and the construction of the new bridge.
